Diesel Engine Core Return: What You Need to Know

Understanding Core Returns

When you purchase a remanufactured diesel engine, you'll encounter something called a "core charge." This guide explains everything you need to know about the core return process.

What is a Core Charge?

A core charge is a refundable deposit you pay when purchasing a remanufactured engine. This charge ensures the old engine (the "core") is returned to the remanufacturer for rebuilding.

Typical Core Charges: - Light-duty diesel engines: $500 - $1,500 - Medium-duty engines: $1,000 - $2,500 - Heavy-duty engines: $2,000 - $5,000

Core Return Requirements

To receive your full core refund, your old engine must meet these criteria:

Acceptable Core Conditions: - Complete long block (block, heads, crankshaft) - No missing major components - No fire or flood damage - No excessive rust or corrosion - Repairable damage only

Unacceptable Conditions: - Cracked or welded blocks - Severely damaged crankshafts - Missing cylinder heads - Catastrophic failure with debris - Saltwater damage

The Core Return Process

Step 1: Document Your Core Before removal, photograph your old engine from multiple angles. Note the serial number and any visible damage.

Step 2: Proper Removal Drain all fluids properly. Cap or plug all openings to prevent contamination. Keep all accessories if not included in the exchange.

Step 3: Packaging Secure the engine on a pallet or in the shipping crate from your new engine. Protect exposed machined surfaces.

Step 4: Timely Return Most remanufacturers require core return within 30-60 days. At US Engine Production, we provide 45 days for core return.

Step 5: Inspection and Refund Once received, we inspect the core and process your refund, typically within 5-7 business days.

Tips for Maximizing Your Core Refund

1. Return promptly - Avoid late return fees 2. Keep it complete - Don't strip parts you don't need 3. Protect during shipping - Damage in transit can reduce refund 4. Drain fluids - Shipping with fluids may incur hazmat fees 5. Document everything - Photos protect you in disputes
